Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Linwood, New York. Whether you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct these tests. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is generally needed from the crown or body hair can be used. Drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options can be examined through hair tests.

In recent times, conducting drug tests has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle drug testing methods. Various employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals are among the key users of hair follicle drug tests. A significant advantage lies in its extended detection timeframe for drug use, which usually lasts up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the initial 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand, providing a long-term history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of roughly 3 months for various substances. It is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 hair strands, about the thickness of a #2 pencil, closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We recommend weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' references scalp hair exclusively, whereas 'body hair' includes all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the lab involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This consists of verifying the integrity of the sample's seal and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data input omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and swift evaluation for drug presence. It is an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples; however, a positive result here must be confirmed for legal admissibility. All samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive from Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. At this point, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other tests (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug tests notably challenging to execute.

Any positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. As necessary, presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation. The entirety of the laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Reduced likelihood of tampering: Hair tests are challenging to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical consumption data: They provide insights on drug use patterns over time rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: The detection window begins approximately 5-7 days after drug use.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence metabolite concentration levels in hair.

Note: Despite the common term "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
