Accredited Drug Testing provides full-service hair follicle drug testing in Lisle, New York. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with testing centers available nationwide in all cities to conduct a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body may be used. Hair tests can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized hair testing options.

In recent years, the technique of drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation employ hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage includes a significantly extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected via an observed collection process, and is extremely difficult to cheat. However, for screening drug use within the last 5 days, the urine test retains its status as the most accurate test.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in its fibers as new strands grow. If taken near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month timeframe for spotting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Referring to head hair solely suggests scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a lab's framework. This process comprises validating the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary fast-check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be accepted in legal proceedings. All samples suspected to be positive in Screening obligatory require an additional confirmation.

If during Screening a sample is suspected to be positive, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are pulled from hair with a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 compliance.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as much as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very hard, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers past data: It provides an understanding of drug use patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variation: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand instead of the scalp-embedded follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Lisle, NY, stands out when compared to traditional urine tests. One key advantage is the detection window, offering up to 90 days of insight into an individual's substance use rather than just a few days. This broader scope is valuable for employers who wish to have a more comprehensive view of an applicant's drug history.

Another benefit of hair tests is the reliability in capturing persistent drug use. While urine tests only detect recent usage, hair tests ensure a more accurate reflection of long-term substance habits, which is critical for enforcing zero-tolerance policies. These factors make hair testing a superior choice.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing makes it invaluable in Lisle, NY, offering up to 90 days of drug use history. This provides employers with an in-depth view of an individual's substance habits, essential for assessing their long-term behaviors—a key consideration in industries prioritizing safety and reliability.

Employers benefit from a comprehensive understanding of potential hires’ past drug use, helping avoid costly hiring mistakes. This prolonged window differentiates hair testing by offering a fuller, historical profile of an individual’s drug use patterns, fostering informed decision-making processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Lisle, NY, hair follicle tests significantly reduce the possibility of sample adulteration. This rigidity makes hair testing much harder to manipulate than urine tests, which can be compromised by various methods. This tamper-resistant attribute guarantees the authenticity and trustworthiness of test results for employers.

The reliability of hair tests lies in their robust collection process. This procedure, often observed, limits opportunities for tampering, ensuring unquestionable results. For organizations focused on maintaining integrity in drug testing, this method stands as an impeccable choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
