Accredited Drug Testing in Livonia, NY, offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol examination you need, we excel in hair testing with centers across the nation ready to conduct these analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Our hair testing can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction for drug screening over traditional methods. They are preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over urine tests. Hair testing is favored for zero-tolerance policies, legal cases, and probation checks due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days, reliability, and difficulty to alter. Although, urine tests still prevail in detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair enables detection of alcohol and drugs for up to roughly a 3-month period. Collection is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and transport is convenient.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair. 'Body hair' encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test result in the laboratory comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, incorporating the sample into the lab system. It involves confirming the sample’s sealing and shipping integrity, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data inputs not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples testing positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening results is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Necessary positive samples undergo washing before confirmation. The overall laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Chronological data: It provides a timeline of drug use over time rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
