At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Loon Lake, New York. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist. We have testing facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests, requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized testing options.

Recent trends in drug testing have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are a staple for employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation services. The primary advantage is a long detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions and extremely difficult to adulterate. Yet, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains most accurate.

What it is, How it works

The technique of hair testing is now perceived as a crucial asset for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a longer-term record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Optimum results are obtained when hair is gathered near the scalp, allowing up to a 90-day window of detection for substances. Its ease of collection, resistance to tampering, and simplicity in transport make it highly efficient.

An optimal test necessitates a 1.5-inch hair sample, about 200 strands—comparable to the size of a #2 pencil—that yield 100mg, suitable for both screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. We advocate weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, the same amount from body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp-originated hair, while "body hair" encompasses other categories (e.g., facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the laboratory's system, involving validation of correct sealing and shipping, LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) assignment, and fulfilling any further data input not handled by an electronic custody system.

Screening executes a preliminary assessment to identify potential abuse of drugs. Although it offers a cost-efficient method for negating drug usage in most samples, any positive findings necessitate confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening require additional confirmation steps.

Upon a presumptive positive outcome at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from hair strands at lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine and oral fluid testing, marking hair drug screening as a notably complex challenge.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is executed using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under the supervision of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a more limited time span.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, leading to more reliable results.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It provides insights into usage habits over time rather than recent consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become detectable within hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs compared to alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests," the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
