Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Manchester, New York. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair analysis, boasting facilities in every city nationwide capable of conducting hair assessments. Typically, an individual needs to provide 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from their head or body. These analyses are suitable for detecting alcohol, drugs, ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly popular method for conducting drug evaluations. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer hair drug assessments over conventional urine tests. This method is chosen by zero-tolerance employers, court systems, and individuals under probationary supervision. Its major advantage lies in its extended detection period, which can cover up to 90 days. The collection is done in a supervised setting, making it extremely challenging to tamper with. Nevertheless, for identifying drug use in the last five days, urine tests remain unsurpassed in their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing stands recognized as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged account of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the threads of the hair as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month period of detection for both alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, not easy to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (about the equivalent size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or any tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is necessary. It's advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In situations where scalp hair is not accessible, an equal quantity of body hair might be obtained. Referring to head hair pertains to scalp hair alone, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four crucial stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample first undergoes processing into the laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift check-on drugs of abuse. Though Screening serves as an economical way to disqualify drug use in most samples, any positive screenings require confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening inevitably need secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the primary specimen, readying for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are drawn from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any screening positives employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory progression, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Challenge to tamper with: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, which enhances the reliability of outcomes.
  • Supplies historical information: It offers a portrayal of drug use over time, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair takes around 5-7 days post drug intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically carry a higher cost relative to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter the quantity of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Even though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
