Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Marathon, New York. Whether you require testing for alcohol or drugs, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities across the nation capable of conducting these analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or other body areas can be used. This testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for screening over the years. Many employers, judges, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently use hair follicle tests. The main advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, collected in a closely monitored setting, making evasion nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting drug use within the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The analysis of hair samples has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term signatures of alcohol and other substances by embedding markers within the developing hair's structure. When harvested near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample approximately 1.5 inches in length with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, optional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent sample of body hair can be utilized. By "head hair", we refer specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" signifies all other types of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in processing a drug test result in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory phase where a sample is entered into a lab's system. This comprises confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift examination for drugs. Though it efficiently indicates drug use absence in most samples, a positive screening result demands verification for court-worthy validity. Samples that preliminarily test positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drug compounds are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex testing approach.

Verification of any positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample anticipated to be positive is cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Contriving results in a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring greater accuracy in findings.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a record of drug utilization over time, unlike methods that only capture recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Factors like hair pigment and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Known frequently as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
