Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Marlborough, New York. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, we are specialists in this domain and have centers in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to specific needs.

In recent periods, the hair follicle drug test has increasingly been the preferred method for detecting drugs. Many employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now favor hair testing over traditional urine tests. This method is chosen by zero-tolerance employers, courtroom settings, and probation officers due to its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, and because it is hard to manipulate.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. With samples taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timespan of up to about three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. It is suggested to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it specifically means scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial submission of a sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening effectively rules out drug use for most samples cost-efficiently, a favorable screen requires confirmation to be validated for court use. Samples indicated as positive in Screening mandatorily need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a positive result in the Screening phase, extra hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is particularly challenging to execute.

Confirming any favorable screening outcome involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumed positives are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. Every laboratory step, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the compliance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It presents a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp that is analyzed in the test.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
