Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Massapequa, New York. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available across all U.S. cities for conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body hair is required. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become integral to drug testing practices. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal entities, or individuals on probation find hair follicle tests invaluable. The extended detection period of up to 90 days, with collection under supervision, makes this test resilient to tampering. However, for drug use screening within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most dependable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair stores a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month observation period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tough to alter, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We endorse weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, an equitable quantity of body hair may be acquired. When talking about head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental phases involved in lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes verifying that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use on the majority of samples, a positive screen needs to be validated to be permissible in court. Any samples that are supposedly positive in Screening do necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is supposedly positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All supposedly positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter observation window.
  • Difficulty to adulterate: It is very challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, rendering the outcomes more precise.
  • Supplies historical data: It can offer a pattern of drug use over a period of time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are normally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Aspects such as hair color and individual variability in hair growth can affect the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When contrasting hair follicle testing with traditional urine testing in Massapequa, NY, the superiority becomes apparent. Hair tests offer unmatched detection accuracy, often reflecting drug use patterns better than urine tests. They detect a broader array of substances and withstand attempts at manipulation, unlike urine tests that can be more vulnerable to evasion tactics.

The reliability of hair follicle testing extends to its observed collection method, minimizing contamination risks. Its extended detection window captures a more comprehensive usage history, outperforming the limited timeframe of urine analyses, hence offering a superior alternative for employers and organizations.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing stands out in Massapequa, NY, for its unparalleled extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This feature allows employers to gain deeper insights into an applicant's or employee's substance use history over a more prolonged period. It provides a robust framework for hiring decisions and workplace policies.

The capability of hair follicle tests to look back over a substantial period contrasts sharply with other methods, which offer only a limited glimpse into recent drug use. This extended window ensures a thorough evaluation, empowering organizations to make informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The robustness of hair follicle tests in Massapequa, NY, offers a formidable defense against tampering, ensuring reliable outcomes. By analyzing hair for substance traces, the possibilities for sample adulteration are significantly minimized, yielding unquestionable results.

Employing stringent collection and analysis protocols, hair follicle testing thwarts typical attempts to interfere with results. This integrity of sample handling provides steadfast assurance to employers and compliance bodies, reinforcing hair testing as a credible and dependable method.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
