Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Meridian, New York. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with testing centers across the entire nation equipped to conduct hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, either from your head or body, generally for sampling. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing services.

The technique of drug testing through hair follicles has become increasingly popular in recent years. Judges, workplaces, and specialists in Substance Abuse are now opting for hair testing over conventional urine methods. Employers with stringent anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and parolees rely on hair follicle tests, given their advantage of offering an extended detection period of drug usage—up to 90 days. Furthermore, hair testing is nearly foolproof due to its observable collection procedure, contrasting with the urine test's higher precision for recent drug use, within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now widely recognized as an effective means for detecting substances and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term history of alcohol and drugs, capturing biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. If collected near the scalp, it can offer a roughly 3-month period to detect alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of around 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) gathered near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is important to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab process for a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample processing into a lab's system. This phase includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, providing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary check for substance abuse. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen is done with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Records usage history: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Non-detection of recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug assessments tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Variance in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although described as "hair follicle tests," the test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Meridian, NY
In comparing hair testing against traditional urine tests, the former stands out for its superior detection capability and reliability. Hair tests have a longer detection window and cannot be easily tampered with or falsified, unlike urine tests which detect recent drug use but are more vulnerable to manipulation, making hair the more trustworthy choice.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Meridian, NY
The extended detection window of hair follicle testing, which can uncover drug usage up to 90 days prior, gives employers a more comprehensive insight into an individual's substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
