Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Morris, New York. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing with testing locations across all cities in the Nationwide network equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair samples can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing preferences.

Lately, the approach to drug testing has evolved to increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers maintaining strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and individuals on probation. Their key advantage is an extended detection span for drug use, typically up to 90 days, with supervised collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most precise for drug detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust mechanism for identifying substance and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the hair fiber strands. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer an estimated detection scope of around 3 months for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is effortless to collect hair, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp will provide 100mg, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments beyond ten panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, body hair of equivalent mass can be gathered. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other variants (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in the lab comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the introductory processing of a specimen into the lab's system. This step encompasses verifying the specimen's proper sealing and shipment, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any extra data details absent from the electronic custody chain.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of potential abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use for most samples, any positive results require confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples that yield presumptive positive results in Screening demand a secondary validation.

Should a specimen yield a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction preparation. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), showcasing why hair drug screening is regarded as a particularly challenging approach.

Confirmation of any positive outcome in the screening process is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing presumptive positivity undergo a thorough wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review within the guidelines of both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Deceptively altering a hair drug test is very challenging, thus yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage pattern: It delivers insight into drug use trends over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Around 5-7 days are needed for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually incurs higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair hue and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: Even though often dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
