Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Sinai, New York. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing and operates facilities in numerous cities across the nation to conduct such tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is generally required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing practices have increasingly adopted hair follicle tests. Employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Firms with zero-tolerance drug policies and courts, as well as probationary programs, prefer hair testing. The main advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, complemented by a supervised collection process that is difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of substances captured in the strands' fibers as they grow. When sourced close to the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug use over a roughly 3-month period. It is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both testing phases. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Four critical steps form the laboratory procedure for drug testing: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in processing the lab system samples. This step involves confirming the sample's correct sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment to spot drug usage. While this step is a cost-effective solution to eliminate most drug usage cases, any positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test positive in the Screening need further confirmation.

Positive samples during Screening undergo additional hair retrieval from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drug separation from hair takes place at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), illustrating the complexity of hair drug testing.

Positive Screenings are validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are cleansed as needed. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the supervision of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing the accuracy of its results.
  • Tracks historical usage: Hair testing delivers a detailed history of drug usage rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect immediate use: Hair requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become apparent.
  • Expense: Hair testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug test methods.
  • Result variations: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Mount Sinai, NY

Hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy. This method provides a longer detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, as opposed to urine tests which cover a shorter period. This extended coverage offers a more comprehensive analysis of an individual's drug history, making it a preferred choice for many.

Reliability is a hallmark of hair testing, minimizing chances to falsify results and hence, offering an edge over urine tests. Particularly in Mount Sinai, NY, hair follicle testing is leading the way with its proven accuracy and depth of detection, showcasing why it is favored in many drug testing protocols.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
