Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Nassau, New York. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we provide nationwide testing facilities, including Nassau, equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed for accurate testing, with either head or body hair usable in most cases. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific requirements.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in the drug testing industry. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies and courts often prefer this method. The significant advantage of hair testing lies in its extensive detection range, often reaching up to 90 days. This test, collected under supervision, is largely tamper-proof, making it highly reliable. However, if detecting recent drug use within the past five days is essential, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method to detect the use of drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug consumption. When hair is sourced near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use within a timeframe of up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment from nearly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation processes. It is advisable to use 150mg for tests such as EtG, add-ons, and those that exceed 10 panels. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar volume of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it particularly refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Summary

The key stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory system. This stage ensures that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is allocated, and any additional data not submitted via an electronic chain of custody system is recorded.

Screening is the preliminary phase for identifying drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug use for most samples, any positive screen must be validated to be acceptable in court. A secondary confirmation is required for samples that are presumptively positive in Screening.

For samples testing presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and undergoes preparation for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the toughest techniques to execute.

Any confirmed positive from screening is validated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. Each phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage spanning up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: It is immensely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Provides use patterns: It can outline a timeline of drug use over a duration, rather than just recent ingestion.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternate drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine testing, hair follicle testing offers enhanced advantages in Nassau, NY. While urine tests are standard, hair tests provide a broader detection window, capturing substance use over extended periods.

  • Longer detection window capturing up to 90 days.
  • Challenges associated with test evasion are minimized.
Employers and agencies find that hair testing offers superior reliability, addressing a more comprehensive snapshot of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Nassau, NY, the extended detection window of hair follicle testing spans up to 90 days, surpassing the typical detection range of urine tests. This extensive range allows employers a more thorough overview of an individual's drug use history, essential for accurate background checks and ensuring workplace integrity. Hair testing provides a valuable resource, reinforcing confidence in the testing process.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Nassau, NY stands as a tamper-resistant method, significantly curtailing opportunities for sample adulteration. Its intrinsic resistance to tampering guarantees unassailable results, providing employers with assurance in their testing programs. Because the hair strands reflect physiology over time, any attempts at manipulation often go undetected, solidifying this method's efficacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
