Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests in Nelsonville, New York. Whether you need a hair drug test or an alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing. We have nationwide testing centers, including every city, to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for testing. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in drug testing methods. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over the traditional urine tests. Employers who enforce zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation programs favor hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days, the observed collection approach, and their difficulty to manipulate. For screening recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests are still the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of a growing hair strand capture biomarkers, providing a comprehensive history of substance use. When hair is cut near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory procedure encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This step includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective solution for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screening outcome must be verified to be legally valid. Samples that are presumptively positive require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lesser concentration than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Verification of a positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug screens can identify drug activity for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection durations.
  • High resistance to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical data provision: Hair tests can reveal patterns of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variable outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Nelsonville, NY, hair follicle tests markedly outperform traditional urine tests. Detection Superiority is a defining characteristic of hair tests, offering much higher accuracy by identifying substance usage over a more extended period.

Employers favor hair follicle tests due to their reliability, minimizing concerns that exist with urine testing, such as sample tampering or short detection windows. Hair testing provides a comprehensive view of an individual’s drug history.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing offers a major advantage in Nelsonville, NY. By analyzing hair samples, drug use can be identified up to 90 days prior, far surpassing the limited timeframe of urine tests.

This prolonged detection period benefits employers by giving them a comprehensive understanding of an applicant or employee’s substance use history, thus supporting informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Nelsonville, NY, is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature, significantly lessening the chance of sample adulteration. This method ensures the authenticity and integrity of the testing process.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle tests offer results that are virtually untamperable, providing reliable and indisputable evidence of drug use. This attribute makes it a preferred choice for many employers and legal entities.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
