At Accredited Drug Testing in North Creek, NY, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol tests is complemented by our vast network of testing centers across the nation. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required, although body hair may suffice. We can analyze specimens for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customize the test to meet specific needs.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has gained popularity among drug testing methods. Increasingly, employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair tests support zero-tolerance policies, offer longer detection periods of up to 90 days, and minimize fraudulent test results, though urine tests remain precise for recent drug usage within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of drugs and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When sourced near the scalp, hair permits detection of alcohol and other drugs for up to 3 months. Collection is straightforward, adulteration is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

For optimal screening and confirmation, a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred sample size. For EtG, additional assessments, or tests involving more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precision in weighing the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s database. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional data required that wasn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, to be valid in court, a positive screen must be confirmed. Samples showing preliminary positive results in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and is then prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at far lower concentration levels compared to alternative procedures like urine or oral fluid testing, thereby making hair drug screening a notably challenging method.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and fulfills the requirements of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a lesser detection timespan.
  • Harder to manipulate results: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers long-term data: It provides a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for detecting recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to have higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth may impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in North Creek, NY surpasses urine testing in several ways. It offers improved detection accuracy, allowing for greater reliability in results. While urine tests are commonly used, the deeper analysis provided by hair testing gives a more comprehensive overview of substance use over time, making it a preferred choice for many organizations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
