Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in North Haven, New York. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair analysis, with testing facilities in cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored to specific needs.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug assessments. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine-based assessments. Organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers frequently utilize hair follicle drug exams. The key advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect drug use over an extended duration of up to 90 days, with observed collection that is nearly infallible. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol consumption history by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers as it grows. When collected near the scalp, it can show drug or alcohol use for up to roughly three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, it's fairly resistant to tampering, and it's easy to send off for testing.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, equates to 100mg, considered the perfect amount for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. If scalp hair can't be collected, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system, which involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use in most cases, a positive screening result needs confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If Screening identifies a sample as presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs are extracted in this stage from hair at much lower concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Confirming any positive Screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: It’s nearly impossible to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a pattern of drug use across time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent use detection: Detectability of drugs in hair occurs around 5-7 days after usage.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called “hair follicle tests,” the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
