At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in North Hills, New York. Whether you’re seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities in every city across the nation equipped for hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Our hair analyses can examine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing services.

In recent times, hair follicle testing has gained popularity as a method for drug detection. It is increasingly requested by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over the standard urine test. Hair drug analysis is favored by no-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probation cases. Its major advantage is the extended detection window for substances, usually up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection method, making cheating almost impossible. Yet, for detecting recent use within the last 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become acknowledged as a robust method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term record for alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the threads of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and effortless to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp furnishes 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemented tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial preparation of a specimen into the lab's system. This step involves ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched accurately, implementing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary and swift evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug presence on most specimens, a positive result needs to be verified for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples appearing presumptively positive are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The total laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, leading to more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: They can show a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result deviations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In North Hills, NY, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests in several ways. Hair testing offers a longer detection period, capturing drug use history effectively. It presents an enhanced level of accuracy and reliability, reflecting a more comprehensive analysis compared to urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
