Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Norwood, New York. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in such testing and operate testing centers nationwide that can carry out hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be tested. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. A growing number of employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection timeframe, lasting up to 90 days. It's conducted under observation, making it highly secure against tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged history of such substances by embedding biomarkers within its strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline of up to 3 months for drugs and alcohol. It is straightforward to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests and those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be utilized. The term “head hair” specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas “body hair” includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory procedure encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial intake phase of a sample within a lab's system. This process verifies correct sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry necessary beyond that provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While economical for excluding drug use in most samples, positive screens must be confirmed to hold up legally. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirming positive screens is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated based on the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage history: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are usually pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," this test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
