Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Palatine Bridge, New York. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we're specialists in hair testing and operate centers in every city nationwide equipped for hair analysis. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed for most tests. Our hair screenings examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide other personalized testing solutions.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle tests for drug detection has increased significantly. Employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse experts are selecting hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are essential for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationers. The major advantage is the ability to detect drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that is nearly impossible to manipulate. Conversely, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting use in the previous 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. A sample collected near the scalp can offer a detection window of up to three months for substances like alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, an ideal sample size for initial testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional screens, or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg is advisable. Use a jeweler’s scale to determine the weight of the specimen. If head hair is unavailable, collect a comparable amount of body hair. By "head hair," we mean only hair from the scalp. "Body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test samples involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to processing the sample into the laboratory system initially. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening delivers a preliminary check for signs of substance abuse. While this step is a cost-effective method to rule out drug use for most samples, positive findings need confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive after Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is complex.

Confirmation of positive findings from screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any such positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review against CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can establish drug use over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is difficult: It is notably challenging to falsify hair drug test results, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers trend data: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair typically after 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Palatine Bridge, NY, hair follicle tests offer an edge over traditional urine tests. They surpass urine testing in detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests cover a broader time frame for detecting substance usage, providing insights traditional urine tests cannot. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
