Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Palisades, New York. If you require drug or alcohol testing utilizing hair, our expertise lies in such testing, with numerous centers nationwide to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, alongside other tailored options.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has grown over recent times. It is now favored by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists as an alternative to conventional urine analysis. This test is embraced by organizations with zero-tolerance stances, judicial bodies, and those on probation due to its extended detection span, lasting up to 90 days, conducted under direct supervision, and its resistance to manipulation. However, urine tests remain the gold standard for identifying recent drug usage, specifically within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying substance use. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers an approximate three-month detection period for both alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hairs (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample quantity of 150mg is advised. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair includes all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab handling of a drug screen are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab’s system, confirming it was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data requirements absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift test for drugs. While Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug consumption in most samples, any positive findings need validating to hold up in court. Samples that are initially positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original batch and set for Extraction. During this phase, drug compounds are isolated from hair at a far lower concentration than in other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing one of the most challenging methods to execute.

Validation of any screening-positive result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in deception: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can indicate a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Palisades, NY, presents distinct advantages over urine tests, offering sharper accuracy and dependability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
