Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Piermont, New York. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, Accredited Drug Testing has extensive expertise in hair analysis, with testing facilities available across all cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for various test types.

In recent years, the approach for drug assessments has increasingly incorporated hair follicle evaluations. Numerous employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The major advantage includes an extended detection duration of up to 90 days, performed in an observed manner, significantly reducing the possibility of tampering. Yet, for assessing recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain superior in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective tool for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to about a 3-month window of detection for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or screenings above 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's best to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equal mass of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" strictly refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases implemented in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This entails checking that the sample was duly sealed and shipped, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry missing from an online chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary swift test for substance abuse. Despite being a cost-effective solution to rule out drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to stand in legal settings. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a specimen return a presumptively positive result in Screening, additional strands are extracted from the original sample and arranged for Extraction. At this step, substances are withdrawn from hair at notably lower concentrations than other practices (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result during screening takes place using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug examinations can detect drug consumption for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection windows.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to adulterate, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is a 5-7 day delay for drugs to manifest within hair.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Influences such as hair pigment and individual disparities in hair growth can impact the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually evaluate the hair strand rather than the hair follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
