Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Port Gibson, New York. When you require a drug or alcohol hair test, rely on Accredited Drug Testing’s specialty in hair analysis, available at centers in all cities Nationwide. A hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches, whether from the crown of the head or body, is generally necessary, and tests can identify substances such as drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with other specialized testing options.

The preference for conducting drug evaluations has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often seek hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Hair analysis is favored by employers upholding zero-tolerance drug policies, the courts, and for those under probationary monitoring. Its chief advantage lies in the extended detection period for drugs, typically up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection method, which makes it tough to deceive. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the go-to for detecting drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of alcohol and other drugs by encapsulating biomarkers in the strands as they grow. Collected near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. It's easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation testing. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in processing a drug test outcome in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample processing within a laboratory's system. This process verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data entry that wasn't provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

If presumptive positivity is indicated in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drug concentrations are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methods to administer.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are pre-washed before Confirmation as required. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Shows usage history: It can depict a timeline of drug use over an extended period, unlike only indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for detecting recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Follicle Testing Over Urine Tests in Port Gibson, NY? The benefits of hair testing compared to urine tests are significant. Hair tests provide longer detection windows, making them more reliable for chronic substance use identification. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
