Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Port Washington, New York. Specializing in hair tests for drugs or alcohol, our extensive network features test centers across the nation ready to conduct hair analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. These tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair analysis options.

The trend in drug screening has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair analysis instead of urine tests. Organizations with strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary services find hair tests advantageous due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, the supervised sample collection process, and minimal chances of tampering. However, urine testing remains more precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, extra tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the sample. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory processing consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires verification to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening need a secondary verification.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed prior to verification as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can provide a timeline of drug use, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs typically take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Port Washington, NY, hair follicle testing emerges as a superior choice compared to urine screenings.
With impressive detection accuracy and dependability, hair tests have become a preferred choice for employers enforcing pristine workplace ethics. Hair analysis delivers robust, tamper-proof results that outshine traditional baseline urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
