Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Portville, New York. Need a hair or alcohol test? Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analysis and has centers nationwide for conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Tests can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests over the years. Many workplaces, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair over urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance policies and are preferred by entities like employers, courts, and probation officers. The extended detection period of up to 90 days and observed sample collection make cheating almost impossible. However, urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a lengthy record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to obtain, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample enters the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional information not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be valid in legal settings. Samples that presumptively test positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further preparation in Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests are generally higher in cost compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
