Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Redford, NY. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing, and our facilities are available in all cities across the nation. In general, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair is required, though body hair might also be utilized. Tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly common method in drug testing practices. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer it over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for those enforcing zero-tolerance policies, as they extend detection up to 90 days, undergo supervised collection, and are difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extensive history of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the circumference of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in laboratory analysis for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any further data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug use. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be permissible in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug Screening exceptionally challenging.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated within the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection time frame.
  • Challenging to bypass: It's significantly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
