Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug evaluations in Rifton, New York. For those in need of alcohol or drug analysis through hair, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities in every city across the country to administer such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair are required. These analyses detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a prevalent choice for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are increasingly favoring hair tests over traditional urine analyses. These tests benefit employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationees by covering drug use for up to 90 days, making cheating very difficult. For more recent usage, within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a crucial method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by trapping biomarkers in the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 strands (approximately as thick as a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the specimen. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase, incorporating the processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This stage ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not supplied through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. While this is a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample prove presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making it a challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleaned as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, compared to shorter windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: It is exceedingly challenging to fool a hair drug test, lending more accuracy to the results.
  • Tracks historical usage: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, beyond recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are needed before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair color and individual growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
