Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Romulus, New York. If you're seeking a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing. Our expertise in hair testing spans across nationwide centers, ready to conduct your test. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient for analysis. Testing options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized techniques.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly choose it over traditional urine tests due to its efficiency. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, along with courts and probation officers, favor this method. Its primary advantage is a 90-day detection capacity, with observation during collection, making it nearly foolproof against tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the initial five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a formidable method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, manipulation is somewhat challenging, and it is easily transported.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. 'Head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory system. This step involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entries absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a confirmatory test.

For samples with presumptive positives in Screening, more hair is obtained from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have shorter detection durations.
  • Hard to compromise: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: It offers a pattern of substance use over a duration, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days to manifest.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The debate between hair follicle and urine testing in Romulus, NY, often highlights the superior detection precision of hair testing. Hair drug testing offers an authentic snapshot of substance history, spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which cover shorter windows. With these advantages, hair testing elevates detection efficiency and reliability, making it the choice for employers serious about maintaining drug-free environments.

Employers in Romulus, NY, seeking reliable test results often find hair follicle testing a compelling alternative to traditional urine tests. The method's outstanding accuracy ensures drug use detection over an extended period, surpassing the limits inherent to urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
