With comprehensive services in Rotterdam, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle testing. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with centers nationwide capable of conducting it. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug tests over urine tests. These tests are vital for employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and for probation monitoring. The main advantage of hair follicle tests is a significantly longer drug detection period, up to 90 days, with an observed collection making it nearly cheat-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a potent instrument for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands’ structure. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate 3-month window for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, it’s relatively challenging to tamper with, and it can be shipped with ease.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (resembling the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is the preferred sample quantity for preliminary screening and conclusive testing. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair not be available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be utilized. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages within lab processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This step ensures proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fills in any additional required information not provided by the electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for drug abuse indicators. While it’s cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples showing initial positive results via Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are derived from hair at significantly reduced concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Samples that are considered presumptive positives are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, thus the results are more reliable.
  • Deliver historical insight: It can expose a timeline of drug usage rather than recent consumption only.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Differences in factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
