In Salisbury, New York, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, we have centers across all cities Nationwide offering hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can determine the presence of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair tests over standard urine ones. With a zero-tolerance approach, employers, judicial systems, and probation services utilize hair tests for their extended detection period up to 90 days, their integrity, and difficulty to manipulate. When detection of recent drug use within 5 days is needed, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to a 3-month detection window for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Its collection process is straightforward, it's relatively hard to adulterate, and it can be transported with ease.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of material, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair might be collected. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s framework. This involves ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening facilitates a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug usage cases in many samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability in court. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are sourced from hair at a lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

For confirmation of any positive screen outcomes, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are utilized. Pre-confirmation washing is performed for all presumptive positives as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test poses significant challenges, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Patterns of drug use over time can be determined, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of reporting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth rate can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

For those in Salisbury, NY, hair follicle testing emerges superior when compared to traditional urine tests. One key advantage is its exceptional detection accuracy, offering a more reliable portrayal of an individual's recent drug history.

  • This superior accuracy is beneficial for ensuring compliance and safety.
  • Hair tests, unlike urine tests, are difficult to manipulate.

The differences are clear: while urine tests can detect drug use within a limited time frame, hair tests provide a longer detection period, boosting their reliability for screening.

Extended Detection Window

One remarkable benefit of hair follicle tests in Salisbury, NY, is their extensive detection window. Unlike other methods, these tests can monitor drug use over a period of up to 90 days. This means employers gain valuable insight into an individual's long-term substance use patterns.

This prolonged detection is crucial for making informed hiring decisions and upholding a drug-free workplace.

  • Employers obtain a comprehensive view of substance use over time.
  • This leads to enhanced safety and compliance in the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Salisbury, NY, the hair follicle test is known for its tamper-resistant nature. It's not just about the accuracy; it's about unwavering trust in the results.

  • The risk of sample tampering is significantly minimized with hair testing.
  • This ensures results that are beyond question.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
