Located in Sandy Creek, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol screening you require, we've got you covered with specialized hair testing facilities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary for testing. Hair follicle tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific needs.

Recently, there's been a significant shift towards hair follicle drug testing over traditional methods. This approach is now preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts, replacing standard urine tests. Employees under zero-tolerance policies, those involved in legal proceedings, and people on probation often undergo these hair tests. The main advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, offering a highly observable and tamper-proof collection. However, urine remains the preferred choice for drug use detection within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive history by capturing biomarkers in the strands of forming hair. When obtained near the scalp, the hair analysis can reveal a detection window extending up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically, while body hair encompasses all other hair types like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

There are four key steps in laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s procedure. This includes validating that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in a legal context. All samples that screen positive initially must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a positive result during Screening, additional hair is harvested from the original sample for the Extraction process. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is notably challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with initial positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
