Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Savannah, New York. If a hair-based drug or alcohol test is required, we specialize in this testing method and provide services across the nation, including Savannah. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the scalp or body is generally needed. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol (ETG), and other specialized testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity lately as a method for drug screening. Courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These tests are advantageous for employers with zero-tolerance policies as they provide extended drug use detection, up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain most effective for recent use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for various substances. Hair is easy to collect, has a low risk of tampering, and is straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands and comparable in size to a #2 pencil, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both initial testing and confirmation procedures. For extended tests like EtG or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. It's recommended to use a jeweler's scale for this measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be used as an alternative. When we discuss head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The key phases in lab processing for a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing within a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry needed not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for potential substance abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples; however, positive results need verification to be valid legally. Samples showing potential positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive result at Screening, additional hair from the initial collection is used for the Extraction phase. In Extraction, substances are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verification of any positive screening result occurs through methods like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation following ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike the shorter range of urine tests.
  • Reduced risk of manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals a history of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Savannah, NY, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer a longer detection window and are nearly impossible to tamper with, unlike urine tests. Employers and officials can confidently rely on hair testing to enforce drug-free policies effectively.

Extended Detection Window

With the ability to trace drug use up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Savannah, NY provides a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history. This extended detection period is invaluable for employers seeking a detailed understanding of a potential or current employee's past drug use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
