Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Savona, New York. Whether seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing extends nationwide, with centers available in every city to conduct these analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or, if needed, body hair can be utilized. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored hair testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for detecting substance use in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Hair tests are utilized by employers with stringent anti-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. The main advantage is a significantly extended detection window of up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process making it highly resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain the superior choice for identifying drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol abuse. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, it allows for a detection timeframe of around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, comprising approximately 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be secured. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that isn't included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening serves as a budget-friendly method to rule out substance use in most samples, a positive outcome necessitates confirmation for court acceptance. Samples with presumptively positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is gathered from the initial sample for the Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirming any positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Prior to confirmation, all samples marked as presumptively positive are washed if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are exceptionally hard to compromise, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a drug usage pattern over a duration, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is a 5-7 day delay before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Savona, NY, hair testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests can demonstrate recent use, hair tests provide a broader overview of an individual's substance history, ensuring employers and other stakeholders receive a complete picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
