Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Scarborough, New York. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we operate testing centers across all cities nationwide capable of performing the procedure. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is required. These tests can analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often opt for hair testing instead of traditional urine testing. This method is favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is a lengthy detection period for drug use, typically extending up to 90 days, collected under supervised conditions, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair offers a comprehensive timeline of usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair fibers as they grow. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month usage history for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp results in 100mg of hair, which is the standard sample for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplementary, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for measurement is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When addressing head hair, it is specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The key phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen into a laboratory's framework. This process involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, attaching a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data requirements not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a financially viable approach for excluding drug usage in most specimens, a positive Screening necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive at the Screening stage, supplemental hair is extracted from the original specimen in preparation for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration level compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a much shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides ongoing data: It offers a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Approximately 5-7 days are required before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Scarborough, NY, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. The accuracy and reliability of hair testing surpass urine tests with its ability to detect drug use over a more extended period. Hair tests are less prone to tampering and provide a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use, making it a preferred choice for ensuring a drug-free environment.

The extended detection window of hair testing reveals drug usage patterns potentially hidden in urine tests. This superior capability allows employers to enforce stricter zero-tolerance policies, effectively minimizing workplace risks related to substance abuse and enhancing overall workplace safety and reliability.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Scarborough, NY, offers a significant advantage with its extended detection window, capturing substance use history for up to 90 days. This broader timeframe provides employers a thorough understanding of an individual's drug use patterns, far exceeding the typical detection period of urine tests.

With hair testing, employers gain a robust tool for assessing applicants' and employees' long-term substance histories. This extended window helps in identifying consistent usage, providing a clearer picture of an individual's commitment to a drug-free lifestyle, and aiding in informed decision-making processes regarding employment and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The risk of sample adulteration is remarkably reduced with hair follicle testing in Scarborough, NY. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests are inherently tamper-resistant, providing results that are both reliable and unquestionable. These attributes make hair testing a preferred option for employers seeking certainty in drug screening outcomes.

Hair follicle tests offer a robust solution against potential tampering attempts that plagued more traditional testing methods. With supervised collection processes and stringent analysis, hair tests ensure that the results reflect true substance use history, maintaining the integrity of the drug testing program and providing peace of mind to all stakeholders involved.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
