Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Scriba, New York. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty in hair testing ensures we have centers nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. An array of substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, can be tested and customized to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance screening. Many employers, legal institutions, and addiction specialists prefer it over urine testing. Hair tests are particularly favored by organizations with strict drug policies and the judicial system. Their main advantage is a longer detection period of up to 90 days, making them hard to falsify. However, urinalysis remains the most precise for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to around a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for examining and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an identical quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we are referring strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Synopsis

The primary phases involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a sample into the lab's framework. This includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift inspection for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be accepted in legal settings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this point, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening stands as the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo cleaning before confirmation as required. The entire lab protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug exams can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine exams which have a briefer detection duration.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can offer a pattern of substance use over a timeframe, not limited to recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug exams are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Scriba, NY, hair follicle testing is gaining popularity over traditional urine tests. Why choose hair testing? It offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair samples reveal a longer drug use history, enabling deeper insight into substance use habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
