Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Slaterville Springs, New York. If a hair drug or alcohol evaluation is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing offers specialized hair testing services and maintains facilities throughout cities nationwide for conducting these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are needed. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific analyses.

In recent times, drug testing methods more commonly utilize the hair follicle drug test. Many employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists are requiring this instead of typical urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The notable advantage of hair testing is its extended detection duration, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it difficult to manipulate. Yet, for detecting recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or testing above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable volume of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of entering a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be valid in court. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In the event that a sample is preliminarily positive during the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set up for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any initial positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes washing before confirmation as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes examination under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is very challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows historical usage: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although sometimes referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
