Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Spencer, New York. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing ensures that we have centers Nationwide capable of administering hair tests. Generally, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches are necessary from the crown or other body areas. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become favored in recent years. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and professionals specializing in Substance Abuse are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation officers commonly choose this method. The primary advantage lies in its extended detection period of up to 90 days. Observing the collection process ensures its reliability and is nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detected within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a detailed record of alcohol and drug usage by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of its growth. When gathered near the scalp, it offers up to about a three-month detection span for substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages of processing a drug test in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into the lab's system. This includes confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Screening is a cost-effective method to negate drug use in most samples, but a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptance. Samples presumed positive in Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), showcasing the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screen results is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive get washed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to circumvent: It’s notably challenging to cheat on a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a timeline of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
