Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Springs, New York. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is required, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair evaluations. We maintain testing facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body may be used. Hair evaluations can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing preferences.

Over recent years, drug testing methods have more frequently incorporated hair follicle drug analyses. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests are chosen by employers with strict anti-drug policies and legal authorities. A significant advantage is their extended detection timeframe, typically up to 90 days, executed under supervision, making cheating nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer around a 3-month lookback period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. It’s advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent volume of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a laboratory drug test includes four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is concerned with the preliminary setup of a specimen in a lab’s system. This step confirms that the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is a budget-friendly means to dismiss drug use in most cases; however, a positive screening result must be verified to be accepted in legal settings. Any samples found presumptively positive during Screening must undergo a follow-up confirmation.

In the event a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During this step, substances are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficulty in deceiving: It is extremely tough to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more exact outcomes.
  • Supplies historical data: Offers a comprehensive view of drug use patterns over a duration, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent intake: Detection of drugs in hair takes roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Springs, NY, hair follicle tests surpass urine analyses by offering superior detection fidelity and reliability. A standout advantage is their extensive detection window, spanning up to 90 days, contrasted with the limited timeframe of a urine test. This capability proves crucial for employers who aim to secure an in-depth understanding of an employee's substance use history, enabling informed and strategic human resource decisions.

Furthermore, hair follicle tests exhibit a higher resilience to evasion techniques. The observed sample collection process adds a layer of integrity not typically found in urine testing, rendering tampering attempts ineffective. In Springs, NY, choosing hair follicle testing over traditional methods serves as a decisive strategy to maintain a drug-free workplace, reducing uncertainties inherent in urine-based assessments.

Extended Detection Window

In Springs, NY, the hair follicle test offers a significant advantage with its extended detection period for drug use, extending up to an impressive 90 days. This comprehensive analysis provides employers with a detailed understanding of an individual's substance use history, far surpassing the typical reach of standard urine tests. This broader time frame allows for a more thorough consideration of candidate suitability and the assurance of workplace integrity.

The capacity to reveal patterns of long-term drug use establishes a more complete picture of an employee's or applicant's lifestyle choices. This insight is crucial for maintaining a safe and responsible workplace environment. Employers in Springs, NY, can thus confidently create informed strategies and policies that promote sobriety, ensuring a productive and compliant operation.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Springs, NY, hair follicle drug tests provide a robust defense against sample tampering, ensuring trustworthy results. Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to adulteration and substitution, hair tests minimize these risks due to their inherent design. By employing a secure, observed collection process, the integrity of the sample remains intact, making it nearly impossible for individuals to alter results.

This tamper-resistant nature of hair tests stands as a testament to their reliability and authenticity. Such assurance is pivotal for employers who demand precise and uncontestable outcomes, aiding in the maintenance of a drug-free environment. In Springs, NY, the authenticity afforded by hair follicle testing guarantees higher confidence levels in the results, thus facilitating transparent and effective decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
