In Staatsburg, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's a hair drug or alcohol examination you require, we specialize in hair testing, providing facilities across the nation for hair sample collection. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more tailored hair testing requests.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often prefer these over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit zero-tolerance workplaces, legal systems, and probation monitoring due to a prolonged detection period of around 90 days, observed sample collection, and difficulty in circumvention. Yet, for drug use detected within five days, urine testing still prevails as the most accurate method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has earned recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a lengthy record of alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When a sample is collected near the scalp, it can yield a detection period of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to adulterate, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, considered the optimal sample for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG inclusions, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal volume of body hair may be utilized. The term "head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other hair types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system, including confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently eliminates drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to implement.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Sample washes are conducted prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test poses significant challenges, thereby ensuring result accuracy.
  • Offers historical data: It uncovers a timeline of drug use spanning a period, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-use for drugs to become apparent.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers a notable advantage over urine testing, especially in Staatsburg, NY. With a longer detection window, hair tests are more effective at uncovering past drug use, potentially spanning up to 90 days. This extended period provides a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use history.

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle tests reduce the likelihood of false negatives and tampering, proving more reliable and trustworthy. Employers and legal entities value this method's ability to accurately reflect a person's drug use habits over traditional, shorter-range tests.

Extended Detection Window

In Staatburg, NY, the extended detection window of hair follicle tests is a significant asset for employers. These tests provide insights into drug use over a period of up to 90 days, offering a broader view of a candidate or employee's history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
