Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in The Glen, New York. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our centers nationwide, including all cities, are equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is necessary. Options include testing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized tests.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, along with courts and probationary bodies, rely on them. Their appeal lies in a longer detection window of up to 90 days, an observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, for detecting drug use within the preceding 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair has the capacity to offer a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and various other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches from roughly 200 strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to provide 150mg of the hair specimen. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Samples that screen positive presumptively require further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thereby ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Insufficient for recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Important: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the assessment actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
