Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Titusville, New York. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in this method and operates facilities across cities Nationwide equipped to conduct these tests. A sample generally requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. The tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be custom-tailored for other needs.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring this over the conventional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary programs employ hair testing. Key advantages of hair analysis include an extended detection timeframe up to 90 days and the specificity of an observed collection process, making it virtually tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drug usage. Hair is easy to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an identical quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test includes four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the introduction of a sample into a lab's system. This entails ensuring the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample is flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It's very hard to deceive a hair drug test, providing more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
