Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout University Gardens, New York. Specializing in hair drug testing, we have facilities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests for both drugs and alcohol. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific substances.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular for identifying drug use. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are choosing hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests are prevalent among zero-tolerance employers and probation programs due to their prolonged detection capability, extending up to 90 days, while being difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust technique to detect alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a history of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fibers. When hair is collected close to the scalp, it can reveal a detection window of roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. The collection process for hair is straightforward, it is somewhat resistant to tampering, and is simplicity itself to ship.

A 1.5-inch snippet of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both preliminary screening and detailed analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types like facial, axillary, and so on.

Process Outline

The lab processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a laboratory integrates the sample into its database. This step comprises checking that the sample has been sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any data entry gaps left by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for the presence of drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, positive screening results require confirmation to hold up in court. Samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples that indicate a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the primary sample to prepare it for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at concentrations substantially lower than those used in other methods such as urine or oral fluid testing, rendering hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmations of any positive screening are carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a lesser detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more credible results.
  • Reveals consumption patterns: Hair tests can map out historical drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Potential Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the examination is actually performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out over urine testing in University Gardens, NY, due to its superior detection ability and dependability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair analyses offer a broader window for detecting drug use. This method’s enhanced reliability eliminates many inconsistencies found in urine tests, establishing it as the preferred choice among discerning employers and professionals.

The meticulous collection and analysis involved in hair testing trim down the chances of false negatives, ensuring that substance abusers are accurately identified.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in University Gardens, NY, offers a significant advantage with its extended detection window. Capable of tracking drug use up to 90 days prior, it offers a comprehensive overview of an individual’s substance history, far exceeding the capabilities of traditional tests. This long detection period aids employers in thoroughly assessing a candidate’s drug use, ensuring they make responsible and informed hiring choices.

This extensive analysis provides assurance and helps maintain a safe and productive workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In University Gardens, NY, hair follicle tests greatly diminish the risk of sample tampering, presenting an almost foolproof solution. Due to the nature of sample collection and analysis, altering results becomes nearly impossible, ensuring reliability and trustworthiness of the outcomes. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
