Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Viola, New York. Specializing in hair tests, we offer services nationwide with centers in every city, capable of conducting hair analyses effectively. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair can be used. Our tests can screen for alcohol/ETG, drugs, or tailored hair test options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the preferred method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often choose hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair tests, valued for their zero-tolerance measure, are harder to manipulate and offer an extended detection window of up to 90 days. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within its strands as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can show up to a 3-month history of alcohol and drug use. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, around 200 strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil), near the scalp is needed; this yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG and additional tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, similar quantities of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair point specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types like facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The drug test process in a lab includes four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of entering a sample into the lab system. It involves checking whether the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While Screening efficiently determines drug absence in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives need to undergo secondary confirmation.

For a sample suspected of being positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are taken from hair in much finer concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), underscoring the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive results during screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed prior to final confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, contributing to more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical use: It shows a timeline of drug use over months, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand—not the follicle beneath the scalp—that is analyzed.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Viola, NY, outshines traditional urine tests with its superior detection accuracy. While urine tests have been standard, they fall short in comparison by having a shorter detection window.

Employers opting for hair tests benefit from its reliability. These tests offer consistent results unaffected by just a few days of abstinence, unlike urine tests that are susceptible to recent alterations.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing, utilized in Viola, NY, can identify drug usage over a prolonged timeframe—up to 90 days. This extended window is crucial for employers seeking to understand long-term substance use patterns.

The comprehensive detection range of hair tests provides insight into an individual's history of drug use, making it ideal for informed hiring decisions and ongoing employee assessments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Viola, NY, hair follicle tests significantly reduce the potential for sample tampering, providing unquestionably reliable results. This method ensures the integrity of the sample collected.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
