Located in Washington Heights, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug test or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all U.S. cities that can conduct these tests. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your head or body is sufficient for testing across drugs, alcohol/ETG or other specialized analyses.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a prevailing method. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and for probation monitoring. Its advantage is a prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision and highly resistant to tampering, though urine tests remain superior for detecting recent drug use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by containing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Its collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is recommended. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Our reference to head hair exclusively pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, randomly assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug abuse. Although cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive outcome in Screening requires confirmation to be valid in judicial settings. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Capable of detecting drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test proves very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a usage pattern over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Restricted recent use detection: Drugs become visible in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically costs more than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the exam itself evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Washington Heights, NY is evident in several key areas. Firstly, hair testing displays superior detection accuracy. Unlike more traditional urine tests, which can miss evidence of substance use due to their shorter detection windows, hair tests offer a comprehensive analysis across a longer period, ensuring reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
