Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Water Valley, New York. Whether for hair drug or alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing is a hair testing specialist with centers nationwide that can facilitate a hair test for you. Generally, hair lengths between 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body are needed. These tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other specialized hair testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now often opt for hair over urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation use these tests. Hair follicle tests offer the advantage of a longer detection window—up to 90 days—collected under supervision and challenging to falsify. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, the urine test remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a historical timeline of such use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to about three months for drugs and alcohol. The process of hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for testing purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure of processing a drug test result in a lab encompasses these four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. The procedure checks if the sample has been properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a rapid initial test for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-effective measure for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For any sample that appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods, such as urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug screening a complex procedure.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening phase is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples that are presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is quite challenging, hence enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Hair takes about 5-7 days before drugs are detectable within it.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variation: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
