In Waverly, New York, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair analysis for drug or alcohol levels, our company operates testing sites nationwide, ensuring accessibility in all cities. To conduct a hair test, generally, about 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Test options include screenings for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized assessments.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become part of drug screening practices. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts often favor these tests over traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict drug abstinence policies, judicial systems, and those on probation prefer hair testing due to its extended drug detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and high resistance to cheating. However, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken close to the scalp, hair can reveal substance use history up to an estimated three-month period. It is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands, about the size of a #2 pencil, nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other hair types (like facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result primarily consists of four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional information not covered by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial test for signs of drug use. Although Screening offers a cost-effective way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples indicated as presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further affirmation.

Should a sample indicate presumptive positivity during the Screening process, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are identified from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging method to implement.

Any positive outcomes from the Screening are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are thoroughly cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligns with ISO / IEC 17025 certification standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can discern drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection span.
  • Challenge to defraud: Hair drug testing is notably hard to manipulate, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It illustrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite detection in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is focused on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
