In Woodmere, New York, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you're seeking a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with testing centers available in cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the head's crown, or body hair can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific hair testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent times. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies and by the judicial system's probation programs. The key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process that minimizes cheating. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use, within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Through capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair, it offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat hard to adulterate, and easy to send.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample for examination and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Mention of head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step involves confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any extra data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening as a testing method.

Positive screening confirmations are executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Fraud resistance: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more reliability in the results.
  • Historical insights: It provides a usage trend over time, rather than indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • No detection of recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are usually more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
