Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Wurtsboro, New York. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing, with nationwide centers capable of performing these assessments. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are required for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a popular method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor them over traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary cases benefit from hair testing. The key advantage is the extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, with observed collection minimizing tampering, though urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of these substances by holding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When close to the scalp, hair can indicate drug or alcohol use for up to nearly 90 days. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hairs (similar to a #2 pencil) cut closest to the scalp supplies 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both initial screening and confirmation. For EtG or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advisable. Should scalp hair be nonexistent, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is concerned with the sample's initial integration into a lab's system. This step verifies the appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data input absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While this is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most samples, any positive result from Screening must be validated for court acceptance. Presumptive positive samples necessitate further confirmation.

For samples indicated as positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly complex.

Any positive screening findings go through Confirmation by using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the oversight of CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for a duration of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter span.
  • Enhanced accuracy: Given its complexity, it is notably hard to deceive a hair drug test.
  • Chronological usage data: Offers insights into patterns of drug use over a long term, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: It typically takes 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally costlier compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth rate may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: These tests are often called "hair follicle tests", though they analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
