In Alamance, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair testing is backed by a nationwide network of centers equipped to conduct hair tests, whether for drugs, alcohol, or specialized options. The requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, typically from the crown or another body part, to carry out an effective analysis.

Hair follicle testing has become a more prevalent method in recent years for drug testing. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This preference is due to the hair testing's ability to provide a detection window of up to 90 days, minimizing the likelihood of tampering. For recent drug use, within a five-day range, urine tests remain the go-to for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a comprehensive history due to the retention of biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair offers an estimated 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. The collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil), equates to 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or when evaluating more than 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, collecting an equivalent quantity of body hair is an option. The term head hair here specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab's system, comprising verification of proper sealing and shipping, allocation of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completion of any extra data input if not supplied through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While it's an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome in Screening needs verification for court acceptance. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a presumptive positive result arises during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at noticeably lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most complex methodologies to implement.

Confirmation of any positive result obtained in screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are subjected to washing prior to Confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Higher resistance to falsification: Being extremely difficult to manipulate, hair drug tests tend to yield more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It shows a drug use trajectory over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapacity to detect recent usage: It takes 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other test forms.
  • Result variability: Hair color differences and personal variations in growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
