Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing for drugs in Altamahaw, NC. As experts in hair and alcohol testing, we provide services in numerous locations nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, though body hair can also be used. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options tailored to your needs.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle tests for drug screening has grown. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair testing over urine tests. It's ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial requirements, and probation cases due to its extended detection period of up to 90 days and its observed, hardly tamperable process. However, for recent drug use (within 5 days), urine tests remain most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures long-term substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strands as they grow. When hair is sampled close to the scalp, it offers a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands, roughly the thickness of a number 2 pencil, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional testing, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be sourced, an equivalent body hair amount may be collected. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results consists of four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data that the electronic chain of custody system might not provide.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug use in most samples, any positive results need confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening demand secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive outcome in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can trace drug use up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resilience to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a drug use pattern over a period, rather than recent usage alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost considerations: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
