In Bakersville, North Carolina, Accredited Drug Testing offers all-encompassing hair follicle drug testing. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair-based tests, with numerous centers across the nation ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. These assessments can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other purposes.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly becoming part of the drug testing repertoire. More employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this method over conventional urine analysis. Ideal for entities with stringent no-drug-use policies, hair tests offer the advantage of detecting drug usage for up to 90 days through a supervised collection, providing a challenge to tamper with. However, for recent drug use detection, within a 5-day window, urine tests remain unmatched.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers in the hair strands as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated 3-month history for alcohol and drug detection. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the hair sample is advised. It's advisable to use a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab procedures for a drug test result entail four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This process checks that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary inspection for drugs of interest. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to discount drug usage for most samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive at Screening proceed to a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lesser concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug analysis can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days earlier, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to compromise, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows history of use: Illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot indicate recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Outcome variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Notice: Though sometimes termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
