Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Bald Head Island, NC. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise in hair testing ensures access in cities nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is often suitable. This test screens for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized further.

Hair follicle drug assessments have gained popularity recently over urine tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors often prefer hair analysis. Those with zero-tolerance policies find it beneficial due to its extended detection span—up to 90 days. It's securely observed and virtually uncheatable. Conversely, urine tests are still optimal for drug use in the prior five days.

What it is, How it works

The effectiveness of hair testing as a method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption has become increasingly recognized. Hair acts as a repository, capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. Hair samples taken near the scalp can offer a detection timeframe of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively tamper-proof, and it is convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It's best to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" strictly pertains to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

The Accessioning phase entails integrating a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase involves an initial drug abuse check. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be courtroom-admissible. A secondary confirmation is necessary for samples that Screen positive.

For a presumptively positive sample in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for further preparation in the Extraction stage. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

The Confirmation phase utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS for any positive screen results. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as required. The whole process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Pros of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage over the last 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows usage patterns: It provides insight into the drug usage trend over time, not just immediate use.

Constraints:

  • No immediate detection: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Differences like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Please note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bald Head Island, NC, hair follicle testing trumps urine testing due to its enhanced detection ability and trustworthiness. While urine tests assess recent substance use, hair tests provide a longer review period, offering a broader insight into usage patterns. This makes hair tests considerably superior, showcasing their capability to uncover deceptive behaviors and proving invaluable for employers aiming to maintain strict drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug testing in Bald Head Island, NC offers an extended window for detecting drug use, covering up to 90 days. Employers gain a clearer picture of a candidate's or employee's substance history, providing a comprehensive overview of any drug use. This extended detection period is crucial for understanding long-term habits rather than just recent use, setting it apart from other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bald Head Island, NC, hair follicle testing stands out due to its resistance to tampering. Unlike other methods, the risk of sample adulteration in hair testing is significantly reduced. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
